Salyards Middle School
When you’re designing a prototype school, you’ve got to keep your eye on reusability. Can this idea fill diverse spaces? Can it transform to fit its context? The design for the new Salyards Middle School is a three-story facility—one that reconfigures itself like a Rubik’s Cube. The footprint is smaller than typical, and, as compared to the district’s existing design, it manages to triple the number of classrooms with daylighting. Corner entries and multiple fronts can be re-sited based on orientation and traffic.
Inside, halls and walls have been improved with an open design concept that includes glass between the classrooms and the main corridor: showcasing the learning. Interactive flex spaces promote self-directed learning and team collaboration. And in the middle of the school? An enclosed courtyard that visually connects the three floors and provides an exterior learning space.
With a wireless overlay for network and internet access, this school creates a sense of collegiate style and meets the technology needs of today’s students. Each classroom includes a Smart Board, two video projection walls, and network hard drops. It’s a design that delivers a configurable space for education.
