Reinvigorating a century-old high school with a design that remembers the past, honors the present, and represents the future
Built over a century ago, Brackenridge High School has developed a strong legacy and undergone many changes over the years. For the most recent of these, the San Antonio Independent School District envisioned a safe learning environment with spaces that embodied the local culture. To help realize their vision, the district engaged our architects to design a complete renovation of the main building, an addition to relocate campus administration to the front of the school, and a new secure vestibule for controlled access.
Our final design transforms the campus into a modern educational facility, complete with a neighborhood concept. Renovated spaces, like the learning stairs, strengthen the students’ sense of community while multiple interior improvements encourage learning and improve wellbeing. Colors, textures, and patterns throughout the school, such as floor pattern wayfinding and a glass front entry vestibule, represent the surrounding culture. The renovated exterior, shaped by the prominent bordering river, helps boost pride within the school and for the community.
Ultimately, the improved quality of space and added flexibility helped the school achieve its fullest potential.
