Presenting the opportunity for shared learning experiences
Katy Independent School District (ISD) already featured science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. The STEM presence in their district was established and thriving. But, at the time, there was no dedicated space for the arts. Katy ISD figured it was time to make a place that brought STEM and the arts together—a place for students, teachers, and mentors to collaborate.
The Robert R. Shaw Center for STEAM is a place where Katy ISD users can intersect. Creativity, communication, and collaboration are explored as roles and responsibilities are rotated. For example, teachers can be learners, students can be leaders, and mentors can be collaborators. It’s a new forum to delve into diverse interests relevant to our changing world.
Another opportunity was to tie the Robert R. Shaw Center to the Miller Career and Technology Center. This partnership increases the classroom and project space and opens up the opportunity for elementary field trips to engineering classes. As a flexible space, Robert R. Shaw will also be able to host district wide science fairs, administration meetings, and community forums.
