The rehabilitation or replacement of 26 bridges along I-70
When the West Virginia Division of Highways (WVDOH) set out to rehabilitate a series of bridges along I-70, they brought us in as prime consultant and quality assurance managers. Our team initially included HDR as a major subconsultant but expanded to include TRC Engineers and Mead & Hunt after the project’s bids exceeded budgeted amounts, due in large part to additional scope added over the project development.
The project included designing 24 bridge rehabilitation plans and two full bridge replacements. We led the design work for these bridges with subconsultant assistance from TRC and HDR. Additional services included traffic (HDR), geotechnical (Stantec), public involvement services (HDR), roadway design services (TRC), environmental and permitting (TRC), and quality assurance review (Mead & Hunt).
With careful coordination between many professionals across the companies, the final plan set included about 2,800 plan sheets and was delivered around seven months after the start date. Construction began in 2019 and is expected for an on-time completion in the fall of 2022. When complete, these rehabilitated and replaced bridges will provide a safer, more reliable travel experience for I-70 users.
