US 301/I-95 Double Crossover Diamond Interchange
More than 37,500 vehicles will travel the U.S. 301 / I-95 interchange corridor daily by 2035. To improve traffic conditions and help motorists get to their destinations more easily, Stantec designed an unusual interchange for the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT).
US 301 and its interchange with I-95 serves a mix of residential and commercial developments, including Robeson County Technical Institute. The original interchange had two opposing through lanes and a significant skew angle, and failed to meet the minimum vertical clearance over I-95. With these challenges, the NCDOT needed a cost effective design that increases capacity, reduces congestion and improves safety for drivers and pedestrians. The initial design scope included a single point urban interchange, but after comparing the constructability and traffic phasing operations of several alternatives, we determined that the Double Crossover Diamond (DCD) design was the best option. The DCD was designed and placed within the existing diamond interchange’s right-of-way footprint. In addition to roadway and structure design, we developed the NEPA environmental assessment for this project.
