Providing safety and facility enhancements for all corridor users
An important roadway connecting South Camden to Interstate 676 (I-676), Atlantic Avenue provides access to the Camden waterfront area and serves several residential, community and industrial properties. With pedestrian activity growing in the area, safety and facility enhancements were needed along the corridor. The County of Camden reached out to us to help.
In places, the corridor lacked pedestrian signal heads, push buttons, and marked crosswalks. Other safety concerns included substandard curbs ramps, missing sidewalk connections, and overgrown vegetation and damaged concrete. We prepared a pedestrian safety study, design plans, and specifications for pedestrian improvements within the right-of-way of Atlantic Avenue between Broadway to South Eighth Street. Additionally, we performed an existing lighting analysis exploring possible improvements. We coordinated with the County, City of Camden, and local stakeholders through the selection of the preferred alternative, design, and construction to provide a design that meets the needs of the community.
The completed project enhances pedestrian safety with improvements to sidewalks, upgraded handicap ramps, and high visibility crosswalks through four intersections and under I-676. It also included signing and striping upgrades as part of traffic calming measures.
