Innovative intersection safety project improves traffic flow while preserving the existing bridge
The South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) needed safety improvements to the Camp Road and Riverland Drive intersection in Charleston County. They engaged our help to widen the bridge and install a roundabout—a relatively new feature on roads in South Carolina—to improve traffic flow and intersection safety.
We provided bridge design, roadway design, and drainage design, as well as utility coordination for the project. Implementing a roundabout at the intersection required widening the flat slab bridge on Riverland Drive over James Island Creek. To maintain the existing hydraulic performance of the bridge, our team produced designs to expand the width of the entire bridge without impacting its height over the creek. We developed the bridge’s cross-slope, a critical design feature, with a replacement asphalt overlay. This allowed for a level widening of the concrete flat slab and maintaining the low chord elevation. We also added sidewalks and increased the height of the bridge barrier with a custom-designed rail to accommodate pedestrians.
With a wider bridge, a roundabout, and new sidewalks, SCDOT’s investment in the Camp Road and Riverland Drive intersection will help improve safety for everyone, from motorists to pedestrians.
