Designing a bridge replacement over the east branch of the Byram River
When the Riversville Road Bridge over the east branch of the Byram River needed to be replaced, our job included structure type studies, preliminary design, environmental permitting, maintenance and protection of traffic design, and final design.
The existing bridge was replaced with a new structure supported by micropile foundations constructed behind the existing abutments. This minimized effects to the wetlands and waterway, and facilitated easier and more cost-effective construction. We also conducted a detailed study of the roadway alignment near the bridge to determine if any horizontal realignment was warranted.
We handled construction inspection services during the construction phase, which included removal and replacement of the entire structure. The bridge was closed to traffic during construction, with a temporary, parallel bridge constructed for traffic bypass.
Lastly, we coordinated with District 3 personnel from the Connecticut Department of Transportation, evaluated contractor proposals and claims, developed monthly payment requisitions, coordinated testing of materials, and prepared as-built drawings.
