The newly renovated UPMC Asbury Heights Skilled Nursing Unit will be promoted as their new flagship facility
UPMC Asbury Heights needed additional skilled nursing beds for their residents, but to accommodate this they would have to convert one floor of their independent living senior apartments. Due to rusted piping and other items that needed to be brought up to code, the project team would face several unknown conditions.
Engaged as the architect on this project, our team designed the new space to feature mostly private bedrooms each with a full 3-fixture bath including an accessible shower. The dining facility was designed to be served plate-to-table from a pantry kitchen, and we also incorporated a spacious activities room and a bathing spa. We used decorative glass in the wall entering the dining area to allow natural light in the core of the building and a sight line into the dining area from the nurse’s station. To accommodate certain building features, we had to detail our design to add elements such as four steel lentils over doorways and topping of existing slab for new showers.
When the conversion was complete, the conversion of UPMC Asbury Heights Building 7-2 offers more much-needed skilled nursing beds to the surrounding community and thoughtful elements to provide comfortable senior care residences.
