A safe garden haven
The New Territorial Dementia Facility is a home for individuals with Alzheimer's disease and related dementias. Paying particular attention to the architectural environment, we didn’t limit ourselves to the provision of a physical shelter, but rather, through thoughtfully designed spaces, we developed a valuable therapeutic resource to the care of individuals with Alzheimer disease – a garden.
The inside perimeter of the gardens were developed using soft landscaped edges, with the height of plant material gradually stepping down into the courtyards. We planted trees around the perimeter of the courtyards to reinforce the sense of an edge rather than a feeling of confinement. The courtyard design promotes interaction with nature - all plant material species were evaluated and selected in terms of a "detrimental potential", in conjunction with their physical properties: flower, fragrance, texture, unique form, fall color, winter interest, and hardiness. These careful plant material selections were deemed safe for ingestion in an effort to safeguard the residents.
Our team was successful in creating a space that carries a feeling of home from the inside of the facility, through to a beautiful outdoor amenity where residents can wander in nature in a safe and secure environment.
