Our design work provides the area’s growing population with a multitude of ways to navigate the Parkway and get from point A to B
When we took on the Garden State Parkway Interchange 91 project, the goals were clear—to complete the interchange by adding the missing movements, remove traffic delays, and improve safety on local roads. Achieving these goals, however, proved to be just as complex as our design solution.
Prior to our work, Interchange 91 and its adjacent roads were hard to navigate. Without a northbound Parkway exit, motorists destined for local streets had to exit at Interchange 90 and drive 1.5 miles (2.4 kilometres) north along Burrsville Road, otherwise they’d have to continue 7 miles (11 kilometres) to Interchange 98, while southbound drivers had to trek 1.5 miles along Lanes Mill Road to reach Interchange 90. This forced traffic onto Burnt Tavern Road, which crosses the Parkway. Without full access, accidents increased, businesses suffered, and bus operations were affected.
Through our traffic and planning study, we created a concept to address these needs. By designing five new ramps—three on the Parkway northbound and two from the south—and eight signalized intersections, three culverts, and 22 right of way parcels, motorists can travel easily, traffic was reduced, and Ocean County’s infrastructure can accommodate new growth.
