The right management strategies for Boston University’s new Booth Theatre and University Production Center

When Boston University moved their highly acclaimed theatre arts program from south end Boston to a site on their main campus, there was a critical need to create expanded facilities for the program. In association with Elkus Manfredi Architects, our team provided project management services for the planning, permitting, design, and construction of the new $100-million theatre complex.

One of the major project challenges of the 75,000-square-foot theatre complex was the tight timeline for planning, design, construction, all done on a fast track schedule of two years. In addition, integration into an adjacent building posed its own set of architectural programming and design challenges. Throughout the project, our team was effectively able to help the university establish goals, assist in team selection, lead the permitting process, and prepare schedules and budgets, while also serving as a community liaison representing the university to the town’s boards, staff, and stakeholders.

The theatre complex features a highly flexible 250-seat studio theatre complete with state-of-the-art production and support facilities, as well as surface and structural parking. The complex houses faculty offices, student spaces, lighting lab, design studios and includes a dramatic landscaped plaza.
