A biotech operation of research and development for synthetic silk and other materials
With a vision for a better world and inspired by nature, Bolt Threads uses biotechnology methods to make materials for the fashion and beauty industries—they make vegan leather from the mycelium of fungi and synthetic silk from the same proteins as a spider’s web. Growing quickly in their industry, the company needed to expand their space, and they brought us in to improve and renovate the interior space of their new headquarters in Emeryville, California.
We designed the entire tenant improvement on their floor in an existing building along with managing construction for the 27,500 square-foot space—we partnered with Gayner Engineers for mechanical, electrical, and plumbing engineering (MEP) and Dome Construction as the contractor. Our design for improving the new Bolt facility includes research and development (R&D) labs, process development labs, a pilot plant, and lab support spaces, as well as administrative, conference, and break areas.
This facility helps Bolt Threads further their research now and into the future—looking to nature to help solve the challenges of the present.
Services for this project were completed by the employees of GL Planning & Design prior to their employment at Stantec.
