Comprehensive civil and structural services

The National Physical Laboratory (NPL) is the United Kingdom's National Measurement Institute and is a world-leading centre of excellence in developing and applying the most accurate measurement standards, science and technology available.

We were appointed by engineering builder M+W Group to provide civil and structural services to create a brand-new world-class laboratory (The Advanced Quantum Metrology Laboratory) for the cutting-edge measurement research facility at the National Physical Laboratory in Teddington. The new building will be connected to the existing Darwin Building through an atrium and has been refurbished to provide additional laboratory space. It will meet the strictest temperature, humidity, noise and vibration requirements, while also protecting a graft of Sir Isaac Newton’s apple tree next to the build. The Advanced Quantum Metrology Laboratory will set new standards for building performance to allow for nano and quantum measuring techniques at the government site.

The new facility at NPL will house an estimated 20 laboratories, for around 40 scientists, specially designed for high precision metrology. The facilities will provide a tightly controlled research environment with stable temperature and humidity levels and minimised interference from vibration (direct and acoustic), and electrical and magnetic fields.
