Design integrated with in-house disciplines helped us achieve an award-winning design for this new community park
Ideally located in a dense South Bronx neighborhood, Melrose Commons Park is a one-acre site that had previously been fenced off and inaccessible to the community. The site had to undergo remediation of contaminated soils prior to construction of the new Yolanda Garcia Park.
Stantec provided landscape architecture design and remediation services to create this community public open space. Through involvement with the community, project stakeholders, key agencies, and multiple charrettes, we collaboratively determined that the primary need was to create a lush park for a community with very little public green space. Amenities include a playground, a spray shower area, a shade structure, passive seating areas, and several large green spaces. Our design also includes security lighting and the location and planning for a fully accessible comfort station. The playground includes fully accessible toddler and preschool units and more challenging climbers for older children.
Our professional team worked seamlessly and expeditiously to coordinate design issues, approvals, staffing, and production for both remediation and design bid documents. The park was selected by the New Jersey Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) to receive a Merit award in their Landscape Architectural Design-Site Design category.
