Artivio Guerrero Park

California passed Prop 84 to support communities that needed places to play. With 6,300 residents and zero parks, the neighborhood of Fruitridge Manor fit the bill, and the City of Sacramento turned to us to create Artivio Guerrero Park, named in honor of a local hero.

The $2.8M grant had a deadline, and the 2.5-acre site was landlocked on a dead-end street surrounded by residential properties, overhead utilities, and no drainage connections. As a social hub for community celebrations and environmental education, the park had to be sustainable with a bright, colorful theme.

Our design involved a water mister pad, picnic area, skate plaza, half basketball court, and trellis. A durable, easy-to-construct wall framed the perimeter, and a 350-foot directional-drill connection for drainage saved time and money. Whimsy, nature, and safety guided refinements such as custom poppy-themed canopies. Other features included fitness equipment, interpretive signs, and drought-tolerant planting.

Artivio Guerrero was a teacher, mentor, community activist and veteran. This park in his old neighborhood was built to be an inspiring place for learning and community building.
