Bayshore Park Field House Expansion and Renovation

Designed for the diverse community it serves

Converting an old field house into a cultural center

Once just a place to change your skates and get warm, the Bayshore Park field house has evolved into a social hub for the West Ottawa community. As part of the Canada 150 Community Infrastructure Program, the building needed to be expanded to increase capacity, and the mechanical, electrical, and structural building systems needed to be upgraded to current building code standards and accessibility guidelines.

The City of Ottawa asked us to contribute engineering expertise for the renovation. But, there were some challenges. Before expansion, the existing walls had to be reinforced to meet current building code. Also, the mechanical systems needed to be updated, and a ventilation system had to be added to improve air quality. Electrical infrastructure was reused where possible, and equipment that could be installed and secured outside was chosen to help maximize the useable space.

In addition to meeting current accessibility and building codes (and SB10 energy compliancy), the functionality of the space and the building’s finishes were upgraded—all the better to position Bayshore Park field house as the modern and welcoming heart of the community it serves.
