Continuous care centers should put people at ease and make them feel at home

When legacy client Wheeling Hospital wanted to create a new, long-term care facility, they brought in our teams to work on the 144-room, three-story structure. But the real question was, how do you design a senior care facility that delivers a home-like feeling?

Sitting on the hilltop above the hospital campus, the Continuous Care Center has scenic views and a woodsy, rustic setting. The rooms are arranged in five separate households, and each household has its own amenities, living area, and comfortable, small dining room served by a country kitchen. The households encircle courtyards for natural light and outdoor recreation.

Resident amenities include a chapel, activity rooms, physical therapy, spas, and a beauty salon. The building, while built on caissons and grade beams, employed the economy of light gauge panelized wall and roof truss systems.

Now complete, the Wheeling Continuous Care Center provides all necessary medical care within a comfortable, homelike environment.
