Overcoming challenges caused by the need to maintain hospital operations during construction
The Northwell Health had a vision for a new, eight-story, $295-million hospital on the campus of the Long Island Jewish Medical Center. To make this dream become a reality, Northwell would have to overcome a variety of logistical issues caused by the need to maintain full facility operations during construction. We were brought on to help.
Our team would provide project management services for development of the Katz Women’s Hospital & Zuckerberg Pavilion. The new facility not only consolidates and expands women’s services, but it also creates efficient linkages to the hospital’s main tower and acts as a centerpiece for the revitalization of the 48-acre campus. The aim? To establish a new “front door” for the facility.
The project offers more beds, operating rooms, treatment rooms, and support spaces, but it also includes a major landscaping effort and roadway re-configuration. The goal was to create an 4.5-acre esplanade, as well as new traffic patterns throughout the hospital campus.
Our successful management of the complicated project elements involved major utility relocations, the temporary relocation of the front entrance, site phasing, and road relocations. The outcome? The Katz Women’s Hospital is helping Northwell to deliver premium women’s healthcare for the Tri-State region.
