Bicycle and Pedestrian Priority Area Improvements
With a growing population in Montgomery County, there was an increasing need to ensure safer travel for residents. As part of a basic order agreement, we were contracted by Montgomery County to provide planning concepts, analysis, and design to add bicycle and improved pedestrian facilities to numerous roadways within the county’s urban areas.
Our team prepared concept and full design plans for Second Avenue, Amherst Avenue, Grosvenor Avenue, and Fenton Street. We walked each site to note existing conditions, reviewed American Disability Act compatibility, site distance concerns, utility locations, storm drain features, adjacent property owners, on-street parking, volume of traffic and pedestrians, and the condition of traffic features. Some improvements included sharrow pavement marking and signing, lane reduction and striped bike lanes, raised medians, new sidewalk ramps, green painted lanes, wayfinding signs, and modified intersections.
As part of this project, we designed the county’s first protected intersection. Implementation of these improvements is ongoing, but the outcome will be transformative—communities will enjoy a more balanced use of the public right-of-way, creating safer, walkable, and bikeable streets for active transportation users.
