Helping the client diversify their energy sources and promote energy efficiency and sustainability
The Dubai Electricity and Water Authority’s Research and Development (DEWA R&D) Center and Laboratory is situated in the desert setting of the largest single-site solar park in the world, the Mohamed bin Rashid Solar Park. In alignment with Dubai’s Integrated Energy Strategy 2030, we designed this new LEED Platinum Certified building that facilitates trailblazing research in renewable energy resources, especially solar power.
Drawing on our experience in laboratory design and sustainability, we developed an efficient, sustainable design for the building by using innovative technologies—a photovoltaic climate skin and skylight, energy-saving equipment selections—and sustainable landscaping. Our design incorporates technology that harnesses solar energy and provides protection from the sun’s intense heat and glare. Taking inspiration from traditional basket-weave mesh, an external screen with energy-generating solar photovoltaic (PV) glass shading elements is a dominant architectural feature that visually declares the client’s commitment to solar energy. Inside, workspaces are organized around a double-height atrium space that features a large glass skylight allowing for a compact, efficient plan without compromising on daylight to create a dynamic, multifunctional space for collaboration.
The new R&D Center and Laboratory will help DEWA respond to the growing demand for energy in the Emirates with renewable solutions for a sustainable future.
