A major roll out of stores in a short amount of time
Converting one Zellers store into a Walmart is one thing. But 37 in 13 months? Unprecedented. In the fall of 2011, Walmart set out to do just that to grow market share in Canada and capitalize on the Christmas 2012 shopping season. Walmart needed a consulting firm with deep resources, coast-to-coast reach, and integrated service capabilities the $120 million program demanded. So they hired us.
A key challenge the Walmart-Stantec team faced was getting construction documents out to tender on time. To get the job done, the team first prioritized stores. We then balanced our workloads across the country to meet Walmart’s priorities and provided regular forecasting to communicate progress and issues. We also helped Walmart streamline its approvals process and used our extensive relationships with authorities having jurisdiction to secure all required permits.
The result? Walmart opened 37 stores in 13 months, all on schedule, with two more completed on time to a revised schedule in 2013. Twenty-five stores opened in a single week and one store—in Newmarket, Ontario—was completed in just 65 days from takeover, in time not just for Christmas, but for back-to-school sales, too.
