Upgrading the region’s road infrastructure, building on local skills, and contributing to the local economy
Between 2010 and 2013, the Australian state of Queensland was hit by cyclones, heavy rainfall, and significant flooding. One of the worst affected areas was the Fitzroy Region where nearly 1,000 kilometres of road was destroyed, and our team was selected to rebuild the damaged road network. Our goal? Help to maintain access along key tourism, freight, and mining routes.
Stantec was selected as the regional program office and our people partnered with Transport and Main Roads’ staff to manage all aspects of the program’s delivery, from construction and design to environmental and safety management. Unlike most urban areas where there are alternate routes, these roads were key to transporting people, goods, and materials to support community and industry. Because of their importance, it was essential that the roads were reconstructed as quickly and as safely as possible.
At the peak of construction there were 15 individual contractors working on more than 50 sites across the region. Our team managed this vast amount of work and delivered the project on time and within the available budget.
