A problematic corridor at North Carolina State University needed a multi-modal solution to improve safety

Western Boulevard is a major arterial facility that bisects the southern and northern campus precincts of North Carolina State University. However, safety was a concern. Thanks to the crossroads that linked NC State campus activity centers south of Western to the Central and North campus precincts, the corridor was pretty congested. This included several major pedestrian, bicycle, and transit crossings.

We led the development of a multi-modal conceptual design for bicycle, pedestrian, and transit facility improvements for a two-mile segment of Western Boulevard in collaboration with Alta Planning+Design and Creativisibility. Safe and effective alternatives to serve the majority of pedestrian, transit, and bicycle movements across and along Western Boulevard were developed, modeled, and evaluated.

Real-time data was gathered using CycleTracks, a web application that traces pedestrian and bicyclist routes. We also used intercept surveys, public kiosks, and our project website forum and news e-blasts.

Our team was on the ground reviewing engineering concepts, talking to students, reviewing accident patterns, and working with stakeholders to develop a sustainable multi-modal conceptual design and implementation strategy that includes a new separated-grade facility.
