Sustainability at the forefront of new health building

The University of California San Francisco (UCSF) Health continually seeks out ways to expand quality care offerings for San Francisco’s Mission Bay area community. They focused their latest efforts on transforming a block of their Mission Bay campus into a multiservice facility and reached out to our team to help.

We established an architectural identity for the east side of Mission Bay Campus that is distinct in appearance and character from the existing UCSF Mission Bay Campus. The Bayfront Medical Center’s materials and aesthetics complement the existing campus tones, and a new outdoor urban park connects the clinic building with the nearby Wayne and Gladys Valley Center for Vision. Additionally, we designed a nine-story, 500-car parking garage that features a 20-by-80-foot (6-by-24-metre) mural by San Francisco artist Kota Ezawa entitled “Peace Piece.”

Our team also provided sustainability consulting and LEED certification for this project. Targeting LEED Gold, the facility features life-cycle impact reduction, solar thermal hot water panels, and a landscaped courtyard with rain gardens for low-impact stormwater design. The parking garage received Parksmart certification, recognizing its high performance and sustainability.

Today, the UCSF Bayfront Medical Building offers a wide range of services, from urgent care, imaging, and a pharmacy to surgical suites and clinical space. The five-story, two-building clinic contains plenty of room to expand UCSF Heath’s offerings at the site for years to come.
