Stono River County Park Planning and Design Services

Local resident Mike Messner donated land to the Charleston County Park and Recreation Commission (CCPRC) to create a park with trail connections—particularly for bikes—to the existing West Ashley Greenway and Southeast Coast Saltwater Paddling Trail. With its proximity to the local river of the same name, CCPRC reached out to us to help make the vision for Stono River County Park a reality.

We provided park planning, landscape architecture, and civil engineering for the development of the park master plan and subsequent design and construction documents. Alongside CCPRC and a steering committee, our team developed several principles that guided the process including an emphasis on preserving, enhancing, and complementing the area’s unique characteristics and natural beauty.

Opened just a few days after the COVID-19 lockdown went into effect, Stono River County Park served as a new destination for the community to enjoy during that time. Residents embraced the space as our society reexamined our relationship with nature, community, and connection.
