Providing the best opportunity for continued redevelopment and economic growth
Six Forks Road, called the “Main Street of Midtown” Raleigh, is a major commuter arterial that provides access to numerous neighborhoods and retail amenities. Our transportation planners provided a complete streets and streetscape corridor plan for Six Forks between I-440 and Lynn Road in Raleigh. The Six Forks Complete Streets Study used a context-sensitive planning process to integrate bicycle, pedestrian, and transit amenities while managing traffic and safety problems. With substantial traffic volumes, our plan focuses on improving access and mobility for vehicles, pedestrians, bicyclists, and transit users.
The study includes strategies for improving pedestrian safety and movement; place-making opportunities, sustainability, enhanced transit service through BRT integration, and multi-modal transportation connectivity. It also includes an innovative approach to transportation planning for this rapidly growing corridor.
Our team, partnered with Design Workshop, married elements of high-quality public space design and land use forecasting with functional traffic modeling and facility design. We incorporated a robust public involvement component including key charrette-based planning, pad polling, visual simulations, and stakeholder interviews. Ultimately, this corridor transformation will provide the best opportunity for continued redevelopment and economic growth and enhance this corridor’s sense of place.
