Planning for public transportation that benefits users and the environment
The Sacramento County Department of Transportation (SACDOT) needed to create plans for short-range transit and California Air Resources Board (CARB) compliant zero-emission buses (ZEB). They engaged our professionals to help develop new service concepts that will influence and inform ZEB feasibility and vice versa.
We recommended improvements to system performance for South and East County Transit as well as potential bus fleet and electric vehicle charging stations to support the zero-emission fleet. These charging stations would be coordinated with the local electric utility provider, Sacramento Municipal Utilities District, to connect to new or existing electrical infrastructure. We also analyzed operating costs of charging methods, recommended operational changes to maintenance, bus driving, and IT, and provided specifications for chargers and buses.
SACDOT’s resulting ZEB master plan includes a fleet management schedule for the county to procure new vehicles as they transition to a fully electric bus fleet. The plan also outlines infrastructure implementation to provide electrical charging at both the operations and maintenance facility as well as at key locations on-route.
