Using lessons learned to plan for a more sustainable transit network.
The City of Winnipeg was the first in Canada to test battery electric buses. The knowledge they’ve gained over the years would be useful in creating a robust zero emission bus go-to-market strategy as part of their $3M transit master plan. However, they weren’t up to date on the newest technology, and were very interested in using Manitoba’s natural resources for hydroelectric generation.
To determine the right mix of buses and infrastructure, we completed considerable research on the zero-emission bus market including bus OEMs, charging and fueling infrastructure. We completed block-by-block route modeling to identify the “ease of implementation” of zero emission buses. We also developed a funding plan to identify resources to help pay for the transition. Lastly, we devised a strategy to ‘electrify’ 10 routes as a Phase 2 pilot, with an eventual full-fleet rollout.
The City of Winnipeg now has a robust go-to-market strategy to complete its transit master plan and provide sustainable travel for residents and visitors now and into the future.
