Potsdamer Platz Arkaden

Transforming mall space in a historic location into a chic urban destination

    Berlin, Germany

A dynamic mixed use retail redevelopment with a unique identity true to its past, present, and future

Before the devastation wrought by WWII and subsequent partitioning of Berlin by the infamous Berlin Wall—the Potzdamer Platz area was the cultural hub of the city, nurturing leading edge art, music, and fashion, and a haven for creative freedom. After reunification and removal of the Berlin Wall, reconstruction efforts in the 1990s created retail space that lacked character and struggled to attract commercial tenants. Re-imagining Potsdamer Platz Arkaden from a stagnant mall into a thriving mixed use retail destination was no small undertaking. Developers asked our design team to help.

We explored a range of options and arrived at a significant redevelopment program to create an iconic, modern destination. Keeping the original glass roof maintained an open atmosphere. The top two floors were demolished and replaced with flagship retail shops and elegant facades. A lively indoor “streetscape” designed with an outdoor urban aesthetic welcomes visitors to a unique shopping experience. A 4,400 square metre gourmet food market and food hall anchors the destination as a gathering place for people to enjoy world-class cuisine, cultural events, and entertainment.

Once again a vibrant, contemporary urban destination, Berlin’s Potsdamer Platz Arkaden recaptures the legendary energy of the area’s golden age in an exciting, pedestrian-friendly shopping and entertainment space for all to enjoy.
