Our designs create a vibrant and welcoming mixed-use commercial-retail space inspired by traditional themes.
Mexico City is one of the Americas’ oldest continually inhabited settlements, with millennia of history. Our designs for public areas of the Mitikah mixed use development, in the culturally rich Coyocan borough, reflect and celebrate the color and visual themes of the area’s history in a modern context, through vibrant materials. The scope of the project included our design of the Mitikah development’s five-level shopping center, food and beverage areas, plazas, gardens, and building entrances. Our goal was to create a sense of connection, linking diverse spaces where people can gather to socialize, be entertained, relax, and enjoy a variety of cuisine.
Guided by Mexico’s lively color palette, and visual themes from indigenous architectural and textile traditions, we wove color and form with function to create pedestrian-friendly plazas and avenues, joining commercial-retail spaces to residential and office towers. Patterns and colors inspired by Aztec culture appear and reappear, flowing along concrete walkways and retail facades. The centrepiece of Mitikah’s main plaza is a monarch butterfly-shaped pool over which hovers a sculpted hummingbird, honoring the beauty and cultural significance of these treasured Mexican pollinators.
Celebrating the uniqueness of Mexican life and culture, we are proud to play a role in placemaking in one of the world’s largest and oldest cities.
