Improving the travel corridor for transit riders, pedestrians, cyclists, and drivers in Montgomery County

Looking to better connect residents and communities to services, education, and local and regional jobs, the Montgomery County Department of Transportation (MCDOT) is introducing a new transit option. The MD 355 Flash Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project will be along the MD 355 corridor from Bethesda to Clarksburg—for approximately 24 miles (37 kilometres). MCDOT engaged us to help.

Working closely with MCDOT and other partners, we’re providing strategic planning and preliminary design services to define project infrastructure improvements while improving BRT performance and customer experience throughout the corridor. Currently, we’re preparing National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) and environmental documents for the project corridor. We’re also assisting the County to develop a request for proposal advertising the project as a progressive design-build project.

To enhance transit connectivity with improved operational reliability, the 30 new stations will include SmarTrip-compatible off‑board fare collection machines, real‑time transit information, and other upgraded amenities. Once complete, the MD 355 BRT will feature dedicated bus lanes, new stations, and enhanced pedestrian and bicycle facilities—helping to reduce traffic congestion and greenhouse gas emissions.
