Identifying opportunities to improve operations
Our corridor study, comprising a 20 mile stretch of Route 9 through seven municipalities, examined the implication of providing an exclusive bus lane along the shoulder of the roadway to allow bus traffic priority movement in this congested area.
We analyzed the corridor along with its 36 intersections and identified a concept plan that would allow for a short term plan for segments where sections of the shoulder operation could be implemented immediately and a long term plan for segments where full depth pavement design was required. We also identified opportunities to improve operations and developed multiple coordinated timing plans at each signalized intersection using software to develop the best scenario to improve traffic flow. These plans included existing and future conditions at the intersections and we prepared a cost/benefit analysis for each scenario to develop a recommended alternative. Finally, our study carefully considered all the potential environmental impacts, access issues and pedestrian and vehicular safety concerns.
This project has been included in the New Jersey’s draft Global Warming Response Act Report as a part of New Jersey Transit’s green corridor initiative.
