Revitalizing a 30-year-old lighting system in Washington
Located in Newhalem, Washington, Ladder Creek Falls and Gardens is beautiful meeting spot for community members to enjoy at any time of day. But when Ladder Creek’s lights illuminate at night, it becomes a “paradise of color in the wilderness.”
Installed in 1928, the colored lights were part of an effort to win public support for a hydroelectric project. For visitors of that era, the lights created a fairyland symbolizing the new wonders of electricity. But over the years, the historic system fell into disrepair—and by 2004, the lighting system was non-functional.
We were brought in as the lighting designer for renovations. Our team consulted on the design and implementation of the rejuvenated illumination scheme. Now after 30 years, this gem of a project has been re-ignited for the people of Newhalem and all the people who pass through the North Cascades National Park throughout the year.
