Arlington Transit’s new facility centralizes bus fleet maintenance and supports commitment to carbon neutrality by 2050

Arlington Transit Bus Operations and Maintenance Facility

Arlington Transit’s (ART’s) bus service provides safe, cost-effective, and sustainable transportation to riders. Committed to providing environmentally friendly alternatives to driving and achieving carbon neutrality by 2050, ART wanted a partner who could help them reach these goals. Our team was selected to design their new operations and maintenance facility and parking structure.

This facility reflects a modern industrial design and offers functional layouts to improve operational efficiency. The exterior character aligns with the regional planning vision established by Arlington County. Intuitive wayfinding is established at entry points through use of material, color, and glazing with biophilic accents. We selected materials for the larger high-performance facades based on longevity, resilience, and durability with passive elements.

To further support ART’s 2050 goal of carbon neutrality, our team used their knowledge of zero-emission technology to perform predictive power modeling with ZEVDecide. This Stantec-created modeling tool assesses the fleet charging requirements to identify the optimal charging solution for a successful transition to zero emission.

Now complete, the new building centralizes maintenance for ART’s bus fleet and allows for more efficient service to travelers.
