A joint venture to improve access to the Norfolk Naval Station and Norfolk International Terminal
When the Navy and the Virginia Department of Transportation asked the Federal Highway Administration to deliver a project that would improve access to the Naval Station Norfolk (NSN) and Norfolk International Terminal, they called us in.
In a joint venture with another design firm and the lead constructor, we created a new I-564 intermodal connector. We also worked on a new commercial vehicle inspection station for NSN and a tie-in to NSN’s new Gate 6 entrance.
The new intermodal connector extends from I-564 by Terminal Blvd. That’s 2.82 miles of four-lane, limited access highway that’ll make it easier to get to the station and terminal. But alongside that, proposed changes also included interchange construction, local connectors, bridges, utility relocations, lighting, ITS, signing, and stormwater management areas.
This new highway will alleviate congestion, improve the level of service on city and naval station streets, and reduce traffic on adjacent roadways.
