A sense of realism offers the community of Denver with an exciting—yet educational—experience at the Downtown Aquarium
At 700 Water Street, Denver’s Downtown Aquarium is an interactive aquarium that presents the story of water, its qualities and characteristics, and its journey from the mountains to the sea through various fragile ecosystems and climactic zones. It’s a fun, family-friendly facility for the community, and we designed it to be that way.
The Downtown Aquarium tells two contrasting stories. One is based locally in Colorado, where a drop of water feeds the entire western United States. The second is a similar mountain source in Indonesia that runs through the endangered rain forests all the way to the Indian Ocean.
The complex incorporates the latest in interactive exhibitory, featuring hands-on displays, explanatory way-finding, and a total interactive experience that facilitates visual, audio, temperature, and humidity changes. The exhibits range from traditional jewel tanks and large acrylic-windowed ocean tanks, to a replicated mountain habitat, an aviary, and a marine mammal habitat.
Total gallonage is approximately one million gallons of water. The exhibit presentations at Ocean Journey are represented as dynamic environments, with immense rock canyons, waterfalls, surprise flash floods, dense rain forests draped with vines, and sky lighted spaces filled with live plants and birds. The 110,000-square-foot facility creates a sense of realism infused with information to offer the community of Denver an exciting yet educational experience.
