Creating a unique sense of place helps drive the regional tourism market and economy
The Broward County Board of Commissioners had a vision to transform the Broward County Convention Center into one of the premier convention venues in North America. Expanding the convention center and constructing the new Headquarters Hotel are expected to attract more business, increase tourism, and create jobs in Broward County.
Stantec is the lead consultant for the expansion and new hotel build, working in collaboration with Fentress Architects for the convention center and Nunzio Marc Desantis Architects (NMDA) for the hotel. Serving as the architect-of-record, we designed the expansion to feature new dining concepts, enhanced water taxi access, and an iconic waterfront plaza. We also provided landscape architecture, connecting the plaza layout to buildings in a free-flowing scheme that echoes wind and water elements framing the site.
The convention center is uniquely adept to tap into the tourism market, sitting adjacent to cruise line terminals. All members of the design team have worked in concert to create a sense of place tailored to the community, echoing the use of local materials and design elements. The project is set to achieve LEED Gold certification.
