Connecting living with retail in a culturally diverse Boston neighborhood
Dot Block comprises nearly a full block in the Glover’s Corner area of Dorchester, Massachusetts. Previously, a run-down, single-story light industrial and retail park, Samuels & Company and Wintergold LLC set out to connect the existing residential fabric of the Meetinghouse Hill neighborhood with the neighborhood retail character. They reached out to our team to help.
We provided master planning, architecture, and interior design services for this project consisting of residential and retail mixed-use space, connecting multiple neighborhoods and creating an atmosphere of culturally diverse energy. We organized the area around a series of pedestrian-focused streets and landscaped area. Neighborhood retail and workspaces front a living shared street, or woonerf, leading to a central plaza. These spaces connect to a large urban green that opens near the residential focused perimeter with landscaped stoop style unit entries.
Along with revitalizing the area, Dot Block provides several designated income restricted apartments as part of the City of Boston’s Neighborhood Diversity Preservation Policy.
