Planning the transportation access, connections, and circulation for a new innovation district

A former automotive manufacturing site, Tonsley Park has become a world-leading mixed-use innovation district and a point of pride for the Cities of Marion and Mitcham. When Renewal SA needed to develop an integrated transportation and parking strategy for Tonsley Innovation District, Flinders University, and Flinders Medical Centre at Bedford Park, our team was brought in to make the plan for those three locations as well as the surrounding suburbs.

We conducted government and industry stakeholder meetings to inform the strategy, and we held workshops to identify the key issues and opportunities for transportation and parking in the area. Plus, our community engagement survey obtained feedback from the public and users of the Flinders and Tonsley Precincts. Our plan and design considered these points as well as development at the Tonsley Innovation District, the expansion to the Flinders Medical Centre, and the Flinders University master plan. Key to future planning was the FlindersLINK railway line extension as well as the South Road grade separation project at Darlington.

Our strategy provided Renewal SA with a range of short, medium, and long-term initiatives that would improve the walking and cycling connections and public transportation services within and between the precincts and with the surrounding urban areas in the Cities of Marion and Mitcham.
