Reducing vehicle congestion using a series of traffic circles

Increasing commercial development was causing congestion on an already busy County Road 120 in Sartell. The City of Sartell, Stearns County, and the developer were looking for a solution. As the city’s engineer, Stantec was the natural choice to find it.

Our primary goals were improving traffic flow heading into the new commercial development and relieving congestion from the nearby medical facilities. After reviewing the traffic volumes, access needs, and site constraints, Stantec determined that three multi-lane roundabouts were the solution for this 2.8 mile corridor. Roundabouts reduce crashes, lower the severity of crashes, improve traffic flow, and increase intersection operating speed.

Roundabouts were new to the area. To ease the transition, Stantec provided education through public meetings, worked with local officials, and displayed poster boards at local businesses and government offices.

Today, traffic flows smoothly and safely along this improved corridor and the adjoining area has been provided with convenient access for additional commercial development.
