Developing a government operations facility to serve the community of Commerce City
Commerce City, Colorado needed a home to house the community’s government operations, justice center, and police department. Not only did they have a prime location just south of the Prairie Gateway Open Space, but the facility would also serve as an entryway to the new Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge.
Combined with a great location, the new Commerce City Civic Center is a state-of-the-art, energy-efficient home for government staff and services. Certified LEED-Silver, the exterior design of the building weaves a natural and urban palette with the use of a unique manufactured stone (nature) and a zinc metal wall panel (urban). The roof—a cool white roof—reduces the demand on the building’s cooling systems by mitigating the “heat island effect”, which is a heat increase caused by asphalt or other dark surfaces that absorb the sun’s energy.
Our team made sure to incorporate access to natural daylighting throughout the design. Most of the building uses access floor and under floor air distribution, enhancing energy efficiency, occupant comfort, and indoor air quality.
