Improving accessibility and safety for bicycles and pedestrians
With a goal of improving the accessibility and quality of their bicycle and pedestrian infrastructure, the Town of Carrboro engaged our team to help achieve their larger vision of a safer and more equitable area along their Main Street corridor.
Under three separate projects, we provided engineering design services to upgrade bicycle and pedestrian infrastructure along East Main Street. With this corridor serving as the main travel route through town, there are high volumes of motor vehicles, pedestrians, and cyclists navigating a dynamic area mixed with residential, college, commercial and retail, and restaurant amenities.
Our work required close coordination with multiple stakeholders—the North Carolina Department of Transportation and Towns of Carrboro and Chapel Hill—to balance the design for all modes of travel. Corridor improvements included traffic signal head upgrades, pedestrian signal upgrades/installation, bike loops, and pavement marking improvements that included the reduction of travel lane widths as well as the installation of bike lanes and boxes.
Today, visitors to Carrboro’s Main Street enjoy safer passage whichever means of transportation they choose.
