Translating historic design elements into a modern context
After nearly 50 years at its historic brownstone on Locust Street, Berger Montague, a class action and commercial litigation law firm, had outgrown their space and infrastructure. Needing a new headquarters that would provide functional space while maintaining their unique identity, they reached out to our team of architects and interior designers to help.
Relocating from low-rise brownstone to a high-rise tower in the heart of Center City required a design that would balance the past, present, and future of the firm. Our design acknowledges the Berger Montague’s 1970s legacy location while providing modern functionality by using architectural symmetry and modern interpretations of traditional details, putting an emphasis on structure, rhythms, and stability. We also created multifunctional spaces that would meet the needs of staff and clients during the day yet allow for the hosting of local community events during off hours.
Berger Montague now occupies 1818 Market Street entire 36th floor and a portion of the 35th floor. The two floors, which are connected by an internal stair, have expansive views, natural light, and a large café that overlooks the city.
