Preparing a community for growth
Northwest Rochester is growing. To support new neighborhoods as well as retail and commercial development, the City of Rochester asked us to design a new roadway. The goal? Safer transportation that lays the groundwork for cost-efficient expansion in the future.
The design included three new roundabouts in a condensed area, and with rolling terrain, close proximity to wetlands, and existing residential and commercial development, the endeavor was complex. The team conducted a traffic study and ran VISSIM simulation to confirm that the design would safely service vehicle traffic in all expected traffic scenarios.
With the integration of complete streets—on-street bike lanes and off-street bike and pedestrian pathways—Badger Hills Drive embraced multi-modal transportation as well as convenient recreational uses for families. We also incorporated a variety of durable and attractive materials including colored concrete pavement and brick paver meridians and islands.
The roundabouts support smooth traffic flows, and the chosen materials will reduce ongoing maintenance costs. With this design, Badger Hills Drive is serving as a model for future roadways in Rochester.
