A major regeneration site for Plymouth providing a new IMAX cinema and restaurants on the former bus station site
Managing their existing retail assets in Plymouth, British Land wanted to increase dwell time for visitors and create a more attractive hub for retail and leisure. As a major landlord in Plymouth with the successful Drake Circus Shopping Centre, they set out to expand by acquiring a redundant bus station adjacent to their centre. Their goal? To create a new leisure hub.
Our work included highways and transport engineering, and we carried out detailed modelling of the scheme's impact. We designed the highway interactions around the frontage of the building. This included working alongside the highway engineers and urban designers to develop a scheme which met British Land’s high standards and prioritised public realm space without compromising highway safety.
The challenge on the highway works was the three-dimensional nature of the site—the main access being on an existing post-war viaduct which carries one of the major routes through the city.
With development above and below the viaduct, we delivered a creative solution that blended old and new construction with differing design parameters, all while delivering this major site in a very active area on one of the main routes through the city centre.
