Exploring China’s history and culture through design
We provided architecture, land planning, and landscape architecture for Chadao West’s 30-acre master plan that encompasses themed retail, dining, and entertainment venues. By using a thematic approach, we sought to reveal the meanings and relationships of China’s cultural and natural heritage, through involvement with people’s stories, artifacts, and geographically significant landscapes.
With a timespan covering two millennia, construction of the Great Wall began in the 7th century B.C. and continued through the late Ming Dynasty. To maintain a historical linkage to the site’s character, Chadao Marketplace was designed with Ming Dynasty architecture, planning, gateways features, and courtyard design. With extensive research conducted, the project team modified the design to accommodate large crowds and allow easy flow between attractions and outdoor courtyards. The landscape of the site was also enhanced to create plenty of shade and highlight unique materials and patterns common to that era.
The mission of this project was to interpret the stories of the past through the creation of a historically significant tourist cultural destination. Our team worked closely with local Chinese designers, archeologists, and experts from Tsinghua University to create the most exciting and historically memorable experience as possible.
