A campus-wide plan to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2050
The University of Windsor has a mission to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. They engaged us to develop a carbon neutral master plan for the campus, comprising more than 50 buildings and a district energy system.
Studying existing operations, we benchmarked energy use and developed a roadmap for achieving net zero carbon emissions from buildings by the target year with an interim 45 percent reduction goal by 2030. Our team analyzed heating and cooling plants, buildings, and energy practices. We conducted site visits, performed utility data analysis, greenhouse gas emissions analysis, and life cycle financial analysis.
We compiled results in a carbon neutral master plan. This plan offers three pathways, each with significant improvements to energy performance and carbon emission reduction—conservation, energy transition, and an inclusive hybrid. Strategies integrate energy conservation, fuel switching to ground source heat pumps and low-temperature district energy, on-site renewable generation, and carbon offsets.
With this plan in hand, the university will have a cost-effective and sustainable transition plan to carbon neutrality.
