An illuminating addition to Edmonton's skyline

The challenge Stantec’s electrical design team was faced with when beginning the Muttart re-lighting project was to incorporate a new lighting system into the existing pyramid structure to achieve an appealing visual effect. Additionally, we were required to keep the luminaires in a controlled environment and make them easily accessible for maintenance. By aiming the lighting strategically from the mounted position to the opposite side of the pyramid, we were able to illuminate the pyramid structure including the glass mullions. Custom-made brackets were used to mount the luminaires to the pyramids without cutting or compromising the existing structure. This design uses the structure as a canvas for the lighting to project around the entire perimeter of the pyramids while keeping the overall lighting energy consumption to approximately 1,750 watts per pyramid at 100 percent operation.

The installed lighting system consists of 156 new high-performance, color-changing RGB (red, green, and blue) light-emitting diode luminaires that can be programmed independently or collectively as a group. Now the Muttart has infinite opportunities to program different ways to light up the river valley community throughout the year.
