Reimaging a busy rail yard to meet demand for increased operating capacity
With the activity in the oil sands area, Canadian National’s (CN) Lynton Yard is as busy as ever. In order to better manage and grow its business, CN has been evaluating the yard’s operations and planning for the future. Ready to move forward with improvements, CN called on one of their preferred service providers—Stantec.
We first tackled the development of a stormwater master drainage plan for the yard. We investigated the conditions and outlined a plan that will allow the yard to meet new discharge allowances required for the site. We also developed a strategy for better managing current drainage patterns. Our report allowed CN to make small changes to existing projects under construction, with the flexibility to further develop the yard with minimal drainage changes. This ultimately improved CN’s ability to plan for expansion, knowing that major drainage work won’t be needed.
We then moved on to developing the realignment of the yard’s east end. Several geographic features in and around the yard are creating a bottleneck for future development. When we’re complete, the redesign will open up areas not previously accessible, allowing for expansion of several existing facilities.
